As one of the rare-earth fluorides, Cerium fluoride (CeF3) has been used as host materials, solid lubricants and inorganic fluorescent materials. Among various CeF3 nanostructures, fullerene-like structure (IF) with the hollow cavities inside have attracted increasing attention because of their novel applied value. In this work, hexagonal phase CeF3 particles with fullerene-like structure were synthesized using the microwave-assisted heating hydrothermal treatment (M-H). The fluorescence spectrum (PL) showed that the sample could absorb the light around 524 nm,554 nm, 780 nm and 850 nm separately then emitted ultraviolet light from 300 nm to 350 nm, which could achieve a large range of energy upconversion.anatase TiO2 was synthetized on the CeF3 surfaces by using microwave-assisted alcohol-thermal method to prepare the CeF3/TiO2 composite. Then the CeF3, TiO2 and CeF3/TiO2 were used in photocatalytic reduction of CO2 experimental respectively. The results showed that only the CeF3/TiO2 composite had the visible light (λ>515 nm) catalytic activity, which indicated that TiO2 could be initiated under the visible light by using CeF3 convert visible light to ultraviolet light, and the spectral response range of TiO2 was extend indirectly.
