Biocompatible Nanotubes as potential Nanocarriers for hydrophobic model food and drug bioactives

Biocompatible nanotubes (NTs) have great potential applications especially in food and drug delivery. The NTs are very interesting because they have uniform wall thickness, two open ends, different interior and exterior layers, different size and cavity diameter. Nanotubes were produced using Layer-by-Layer (LbL) deposition of negatively charged Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) and a positively charged biopolymer into a nano-porous membrane (pore diameter, 400 nm) as a template. The template was dissolved using a solvent. Deposition of one and two bilayers resulted in nanotubes that were not strong enough to endure stresses during removal from the template, washing and drying. By assembling three bilayers, robust nanotubes were produced. Curcumin was used as a hydrophobic bioactive model to evaluate the loading capacity of hydrophobic compounds. The loading capacity of curcumin into the NTs cavities was 45±4 %. We tried to produce NTs from interaction of BSA-Curcumin. The SEM images show that the NTs from BSA-Cur have big cavities but the aqueous solution couldn’t pass through the pores. Unfortunately, the NTs produced from two bilayers of BSA-Cur were not strong enough to maintain the tubular shape in the solution state and there were some deformations in the tubular shape.
