An innovative composite material based on cellulose matrix has been developed. Active thermal insulation properties have been conferred to the material through the integration of Phase Change Materials (PCM) into the matrix. Processing techniques of the material have been studied in order to realize a sampling of packaging for testing. Laboratory tests confirmed the smart properties of the material while collaborations with companies have allowed to test packaging in real conditions during transport and storage phases and compare them with standard packaging. Results obtained have demonstrated that the use of active thermal insulation packaging can reduce food waste and, in addition, can also reduce the use of refrigerator systems. Finally, the developed active packaging can significantly contribute to food safety because they play an important role in controlling the spread of epidemics in food related with the increase of temperature.
