A sensor that integrates the detection and transduction of the signal to a display is presented in this work. The device comprises a holographic grating embed in a polymer. The polymer is an elastomer that interacts with hydrocarbon gases and volatile organic compounds in a specific manner. As the polymer interacts with the molecules a conformational change alters the optical grating detected as a change in display wavelength or color. The changes can not only be accurately measured with a reflectometer for different concentrations or type of molecules, but also as changes in color easily detected with the naked eye.
