Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) have attracted great attention in electrochemical devices because of their high energy conversion efficiency, little pollution and widely flexible fuel choices. Scheelite type based oxide ion conducting materials like PbWO4, BaMoO4, SrMoO4 having more ion conductivity and it can also be used as electrolyte for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cell (ITSOFC) applications. The present work aims to develop nanocrystalline Dy3+ doped BaMoO4 to increase the ionic conductivity for ITSOFC applications. Nanocrystalline dysprosium doped BaMoO4 samples were prepared by acrylamide assisted combustion process. All the samples were characterized by TG/DTA, XRD, FTIR and SEM-EDX techniques and studied their grain and grain boundary conductivities through impedance measurements. XRD patterns of the Dy3+ doped BaMoO4 samples and the formation of the crystalline BaMoO4 phase and some mixed phases are confirmed by comparing the ICDD data with the observed XRD peaks. The crystallite size is calculated using Scherrer’s formula for all the compositions of compounds and they are found to be less than 100 nm. FTIR spectra results confirm the formation of MoO3 structure in Dy3+ doped BaMoO4 samples. SEM image of a particular composition of Dy3+ doped BaMoO4 sample (BDM4) showed agglomerated spherical particles.
