Alkoxide-based precursors for direct drawing of metal oxide micro- and nanofibres

Metal oxide micro- and nanofibre materials are crucial in numerous technical solutions like textiles, filter mattes, optical cables, thermal insulators, reinforcing components, etc. However, complications to prepare these materials in desired shape often limit their applicability. The sol–gel process is of special interest because the structures of needed final shape can be obtained as a result of gelation of sols in suitable molds as thin films or jets pulled into air. Combining the chemical processing with mechanical manipulations enables preparing the materials in glassy or nanochrystalline structure in a wide range of nano and micro-shapes. In this study, aqueous and non-aqueous polymerization methods were applied for preparing precursors from Sn(OBu)4. Fibres with aspect ratio up to 10000 and diameter down to 200 nm are directly drawn from the precursors by different manipulations carried out at room temperature in normal lab atmosphere. Obtained fibres have excellent characteristics as ultra high homogeneity and low surface roughness, which guaranty their waveguiding properties with loss 0.8 dB/mm or less.
