Synthesis of Nanostructures from Carbides Sheets

Nanotubes and nanoparticles were obtained from a lamellar solid phase using a two step method: mechanical alloying (MA) and heat treatment. MA was used to prepare the monometallic carbide and the bimetallic carbides by milling of pure elemental powders of cobalt, molybdenum, titanium, titania and carbon, and mixtures of both Ni-Mo and Co-Mo with carbon, in a high-energy rotating mill under an Ar atmosphere. The nanocrystalline carbides were used to produce metal filled nanotubes and nanoparticles, through precipitation and after 15 minutes of heating at 800°C. Microstructural characterization of the as-milled and heat-treated powders was performed using Scanning (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) techniques. Milled powders presented flake-like shapes. Observation of heat treated powders showed filled, decorated and intercalated nanotubes, carbide nanorods and nanoparticles. Nanotubes appeared mainly in bimetallic samples and nanorods in monometallic carbides.
