Potential users of nanoparticles want the particles in a ready-to-use form. The market currently offers practically only raw materials and standard nanoparticles not tailored to a specific application. A newly developed chemo-mechanical converting process for ready-to-use nanoparticles is introduced. The technology of Small Molecule Surface Modification (SMSM) developed at the INM Leibniz Institute for New Materials in Saarbrucken, Germany, is used in connection with an agitator bead mill in recirculation mode. The ennoblement process yields – based on low quality nano- or microparticle precursors – tailored, surface modified nanoparticles that (a) don’t agglomerate, (b) show excellent wetting and dispersing within the end product formulation and (c) bond chemically to the end product matrix or carry another functionalization. Several application examples offering interesting product development opportunities will be discussed. As the talk is intended for the Business Development Track, it will conclude introducing the business models Buhler suggests for potential partners both on the client side as well as on the core business building side itself.
