The present paper reports relationships between structural characteristics of carbon materials and conditions of their production. C60 thin films were grown by a vacuum deposition technique on various substrates. We demonstrate effect of the substrate material and temperature as well as the deposition rate on the crystalline structure of the films, as measured by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). The effects observed are discussed in terms of mobility of C60 molecules during nucleation of the first monolayer and the character and strength of adsorbate -substrate interaction at the surface substrate. Multiwalled carbon nanotubes and nanofibers as well as various nanoclusters were produced by a thermocatalytical disproportionation of carbon monoxide. Using High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) we demonstrated a difference in the layered structure of multiwalled carbon nanotubes and nanofibers. We report for the first time on the production and atomic structure of carbon-encapsulated nanoclusters of Fe and Fe3O4. A possible mechanism for a formation of such nanostructures is suggested.
