We present a novel ultrathin and biocompatible membrane based on highly cross-linked and subsequently PEGylated self- assembled monolayers. These layers can be removed from their substrates and freely suspended over TEM grids. Possible applications of the ca. 5 nm thick membranes are as biocompatible supports in TEM.
