A molecular approach was envisaged for the preparation of nanoparticles supported on carbon. The support was first treated in order to build suitable anchors for organometallic compounds on the surface. Palladium clusters of various nuclearities were then grafted, and after a gentle thermal activation, homogeneously dispersed supported nanoparticles of 1-10 nm in size were obtained. These particles displayed an activity in hydrogenation catalysis.
