The Effect of POSS Compatibility on the Morphology of Thiol-ene Polymer Nanocomposites

Authors:T. Clark, C. Hoyle and S. Nazerenko

Abstract:The physical properties of thiol-ene/POSS nanocomposites are measured and used to indicate the morphological changes of the materials as a function of POSS concentrations. Vinyl POSS monomers are modified with various organic pendants using an amine-catalyzed thiol Michael addition reaction. The pendant groups are useful in analyzing the affect of organic moieties on the compatibility of POSS nanoparticles with the trithiol comonomer. The POSS particles are chemically incorporated in the trithiol-TAE (triallyl ether) polymer network by a thiol-ene photopolymerization. The physical properties of the nanocomposites are analyzed for films containing 0, 5, 10, 20, and 50 mol% of the vinyl POSS monomer.
