The continuous push for performance enhancement in important existing and emerging applications has generated substantial interest in engineered fine particles. There are many examples of the improved optical, electronic, and physical properties achieved by controlling the morphology, composition and surface functionality of fine particles. To realize fully the broad benefits of fine particle solutions, it is necessary to implement an application-based approach to solving R&D problems and implementing commercially viable solutions. Working closely with end-users and partners, Cabot SMP is developing solutions and manufacturing fine particle products for electronics, energy materials, displays, and other applications. In this talk, we address the importance of understanding the applications requirements and provide selected examples of application-driven particle manufacturing and formulation. One example will discuss the manufacturing challenges associated with production and processing of luminescent phosphor particles for applications in lighting, displays and imaging. Figure 1 shows the typical luminescent layer produced by depositing micron and sub-micron spherical particles with controlled properties. We will discuss optimization of phosphor particles and layer properties for specific applications. The implementation of fine particle solution and development of dispersions and formulations for electronics and other applications will also be discussed.
