Transfer of Atoms Between Condensates by Raman Transitions

Abstract:Law and Bigelow (Phys.Rev. A58,4791,1998) have proposed a scheme for amplifying an atomic beam as it interacts with a confined alkali-atom condensate. In this scheme the condensate acts as a source for increasing the intensity of the atomic beam. The amplification of the beam is achieved by the coupling of the atomic beam with the condensate through an optical laser which induces Raman excitation. We propose to show that reverse process, an opposite of the Law and Bigelow scheme is possible in which the atomic beam amplifies the condensate. By combining the two schemes, we show in this conference presentation that two independent condensates can be coupled so that the number of atoms in the condensates can be exchanged. The exchange parameter depends on the size of the condensates, Raman intensities and the confining potentials. Nemerical results for the exchange parameter are presented.
