Submicron Circuit Design with BSIM3/4
Workshop on Compact Modeling Tutorial

Abstract
The development of the BSIM family was started around 15 years ago and the
third generation of the family, BSIM3v3 has been selected to be the present
industrial. Due to the rapid development of new features, the philosophy
of the BSIM models that leads to its success has often been overlooked. In
this tutorial, the different tradeoffs in modeling directions will first be
overviewed to explain the approach taken by BSIM. The fundamental equations
in BSIM3 will be explained that follow the classical Meyer's model that most
circuit design techniques are based on. A set of simplified equations will
be given that can be used for hand calculation with reduced number of parameters.
Finally, the advanced features provided by BSIM4, the forth generation and
newest member of the family will be described.
